Provincial Election Day!

Just about to go grab my wife and go vote! Only problem is, not one single candidate is worth my time. I love politics, but this election has me depressed.  How can these two inspire confidence?

Could I possibly vote for the Green party? Libertarian maybe? NDP? Who knows!

Weekly Movie Review

Warrior

I will start my review by saying that I am a mixed martial arts fanatic. I train in the sport, I have been in the ring and despite Shauna's concerns, I hope to be again. Now with all that said Warrior is an exceptional story of a family trying to piece together their lives individually and together.

This film stars Tom Hardy (Inception, Bronson), Joel Edgerton (Smoking Aces, The Thing) and Nick Nolte. I know there isn't a huge drawing power name (until the new batman comes out and Hardy becomes the new Heath Ledger for his performance as Bane) but all I have to say is despite the fact that this movie is about "fighting" it is not a soft film in the same genre as "Never Back Down" or an overly artsy mess like the mind bogglingly bad "Redbelt".

Warrior is a character driven film, the slow paced, emotional dialogue and dark first person cinematography, grasps you and doesn't allow you too look away. Nick Nolte steals the show as the formerly abusive alcoholic father, who is trying to gain back the family he threw away. I have never really been a Nolte fan but with this performance I think he really took the turmoil and chaos from his own life and had to look himself in the mirror. IMO academy award consideration would be merited!

In an attempt to not give away too much of the plot I will only give you some quick summary. the two brothers, who have been estranged for so long, rediscover each other through their Father, Both men are fighting for something in the lives and make the way to a 16 man tournament to find out who is the best middleweight in the world. With a 5 million dollar prize on the line sparks fly.

Some of the fight scenes, mostly the take-downs, are a little over then top but the grappling displays were excellent and overall I think they captured some of MMA's essence while adding in some pro wrestling flare!

Overall I would give this movie a solid 9/10.

Go check it out!!!

Pressure

Despite my prayers, wishes and dreams today is still only Tuesday! I still have the majority of the work week to go, and there is no end in sight, but as a counter to the depressing tirade you may feel I was about to go on, I will acknowledge the potential for things to improve,

Sure I have about 50 hours of work and commute still to come for the week but tonight Shauna and I are headed to a Comedy show, That should be fun, Tomorrow night I get to baby sit my son, usually that is awesome (although he is sick and that makes him only slightly less depressing then the large majority of my co-workers lol), followed by a little thursday night Greys Anatomy (Don't judge me), and finally after that the weekend will be here!

I remember how weekends use to feel in my late teens and early twenties......An overwhelming feeling of eagerness for the inevitable drunken non-sense that is in our near future. Only to wake up somewhere with a violent hangover and the ringing fear that you may roll over and regret the decisions that the intoxicated shell of yourself may have made for you in your Blacked out state.

Situations like I have described, make me appreciate the simple joys of life, like the ability to pee with out pain and eat breakfast without fear of a violent evacuation!  Some people live for those weekends. I am not that person.

I married too young some would say, 23 years old and walking down the aisle. Engaged after 13 months of knowing each other. We just celebrated our third Wedding Anniversary, and next month we will celebrate Carrick's first Birthday. Massive Decisions are funny like that. Looking back it almost feels like a flip of a coin, made by a immature version of myself, gambling with the life that was ahead of him.

Now on one side of the coin you have independance, on the other is partnership and loyalty. I will admit the former would have been the easier path, not as many bumps or turns but you go that path alone. The harder path was what that "kid" chose, one with cliffs and dragons and all types of mythical creatures that terrified you as a youth (mostly about 7 days a month), all in all, it was a flip that went my way.

Now some may wonder how the hell I got from talking about the dread of my upcoming work week to the decisions of my life? I have about as little of an idea as you do. It happened though and isn't that the beauty of a blog? Just random scrapings from the mind, unedited and unfiltered? Well Hopefully or I will never get a fan base!

Genesis

As this is my first ever blog entry I must warn you, I am not a prolific writer, a poet or a visionary, I am a 26 year old Technician who build electrical equipment, a father of one and a husband! For the past 3-4 years I have been bouncing around the idea of starting a blog. I have never been a journal writer but I thought "Hey I have some interesting perspectives and whatnot, people will wanna read my stuff" and whether that is true or a standard male egotistical view point of importance and self assurance I do not know lol.

So then the conversation came to subject matter! the defining point of the blog. I thought personally it would base around movies, sports, politics, food or phenomena. My Wife Shauna brought up a valid point though, why not write it as a Dad? Not just about what parenting is like for a younger male but also my life in general. There are so many great mothers blogs on the web but so few for us daddy's!

Well let me give you some background story to help you understand my life. My Wife is Shauna, She is a research assistant who works for the local university, She is 26 years old and is my rock.

Carrick is my son, he turns 11 months old in just a few short days! Every day he is my inspiration to live better, do better and be better than I did yesterday. He is the reason I sacrifice some personal joy and work at a job where they pay me more and respect me less, because at the end of the day the small sacrifices I make for him will come back around as I see him develop with as many advantages as possible.

My Sister Tamara is 30, and her Daughter (our godchild) Sophia is 5. They just moved across the country to come live with us. When it comes to family, especially when you dont have any within a 60 hour drive, the more the merrier!

So that is the immediate cast of characters in my life. I really hope that this can be a fun experience for everyone especially myself, and hey maybe down the road it offers a little insight to Carrick about who his daddy was at 26 years old!
